Yeah you heard it right you can use your mobile devices to detect an earthquake . Your Android and Ios devices consists of motions sensors which with the help of some html codes can be used as a basic seismometer which are use to detect earthquakes.
You don't need any app installed all you need is a web browser which support Html and Java scripts which most modern web browser do .
When you open this post on your mobile devices you would see a continuously moving wave form however if you shake or tilt you device you would see a change in seismic vibration it thus it captures the slightest movement in real time .
We have used a simply complex java Script to make this Basic seismometer work , all it does is that uses the built in hardware accelerometers and gyroscopes of your device to map the seismic vibration in real time .
It uses device orientation and HTML5 to capture the motion data .
At the time of earthquake keep your devices on the floor or a stable surface and check if there is any change in the seismic waves to see the intensity of the earthquake .
You can also turn on acceleration and sensor options on google chrome on your pc and lappies to use this Using Chrome Dev tools.
