It was firstly speculated that the Snapdragon 820 would be featuring Qualcomm's custom cores and now it has been finally confirmed that the 820 would be featuring Qualcomm's custom build Kyro cores and the details about it have been revealed. There where also a lot of rumors about the 820 cores to reach 3.0 Ghz, however such core frequencies where found to be false.
It was firstly revealed that the 820 would feature an Adreno 530 GPU and the Hexagon 680 DSP ( Digital Signal Processor) which according to Qualcomm will handle some processor tasks and reduce battery usage increasing effective performance.
Today we will get into the details of the Kyro cores, Qualcomm have been recently using the ARM’s Big little cores in there recent high end mobile chipset. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 Soc which featured ARM's Big little A57 cores subsequently showed power management, underclocking and throttling issues in many high end devices in the market which resulted in subsequent downfall of there market shares. Many companies like LG used the lower ranged hexacore 808 Soc in there flaghip devices like the G4 and the upcoming Nexus 2015 (Click Here to read Nexus 2015 Full Specifications Leaked) as both the devices performed similar in real world performance as the 810 underclocked itself.
According to Qualcomm they have seen a signification improvement of 2x performance and power issues using the Kyro cores in comparsion to the 810, and it would be able to reach a top frequency of 2.2 Ghz in comparsion to 2.0Ghz of the 810 which is quite impressive.
The Kyro cores are successor of the Krait cores and are the first 64-bit processing cores from Qualcomm, based on Samsung's 14nm FinFET process, which thus removes TSMC from the equation, thus we might see a subsequent downfall in TSMC's value.
Heterogeneous computing refers to using a different processor for a specific task to provide better performance and seems like Qualcomm have shown a lot of interest in it. And thus the 820 is benefited with it with the announcement of Symphony System Manager which would deal with the Heterogeneous computing processes.
