Intel and Micron have recently revealed their newly developed 3D XPoint Memory and Storage Technology, which according to them can provide 1000 times better read and write speed than flash storage and SSD (Solid State Drives) used in current genPc's. According to the developers the 3D XPoint is a non-volatile storage technology, thus it can be used both as Memory(RAM) and Storage device of a computer.
According to Intel and Micron, 3D XPoint is a huge achievement in the terms of memory technology development. As since the introduction of NAND flash technology which is currently being used in SSD's, 3D XPoint is the first major development in the memory category.
The 3D XPoint will have have 10 times greater density then currently used memory technology which in turns provides much greater storage at the same physical space allotted while remaining power efficient and affordable as the current storage devices.
3D XPoint works on a material bulk property that changes its substitute bits from low resistance to high resistance states thus it doesn't uses transistors and it is non electronic based storage.
As the 3D XPoint technology is 1000 times faster than the currently used NAND technology its latency is measured in nanoseconds instead of microseconds.
A consumer Grade SSD provides writing of 40GB/day for 5years while the Xpoint would provide 40TB/day for 5 years.

Performance Impact-
The new technology would certainly bring a game changing performance in modern computing especially in Gaming as current memory technology isn't able to push raw data as fast as the 3d Xpoint would possibly and applications which require low latency storage would also take advantage from it.
According to Rob Crooke, the Vp of Intel “For decades, the industry has searched for ways to reduce the lag time between the processor and data to allow much faster analysis. This new class of non-volatile memory achieves this goal and brings game-changing performance to memory and storage solutions.”
According to Intel And Micron that they would start its production by this year and would be available in the consumer market by 2016, however they still haven't decided on the licensing of the technology.
